Animal Keeping

Do you keep animals? Do you have less than 5 acres?

Depending on your current zoning and deed restrictions (CC&Rs) there are various restrictions on animal keeping.

Current
For GR, under Permitted Uses, Commercial Agriculture, it mentions the following two items regarding animals:
2. The raising and marketing of poultry, rabbits and small animals, but the slaughtering of only those raised on the premises.
3. The grazing and raising of livestock and horses, except that not more than three hogs shall be kept or maintained on any parcel, lot, or tract under one ownership within 500 feet of any residential zone or more restrictive zone.

(There are no non-commercial restrictions mentioned.)

ANIMAL KEEPING NOTES:
Large swaths of land in Pinal County are zoned as General Rural. In the new zoning proposal, everything under General Rural was crossed out and referred to the regulations under RU 1.25. Here again is the link to the marked-up version of the canceled DRAFT. RU 1.25 starts on page 353. For RU-1.25, in the canceled draft If you have less than 5 acres, there were many proposed restrictions regarding what kind and how many animals you can keep on your land. RU- 1.25 refers us to the new section on Animal Keeping. (See pages 170-173, Chapter 2.150. of the markup DRAFT.)

Here are some examples:
For large livestock, you can have 2 animals on your first acre, and an additional animal for every .5 acres. (large livestock is defined as cattle, horses, oxen, mules, donkeys, sheep, goats, llamas, alpacas, ostrich, emus and rheas)
For Pigs, you can have 1 pig per acre and not more than 3 pigs tin otal.
For Chicken hens, you can have up to 50 on an acre, and an additional 10 chickens per .5 acres, not to exceed 200 chicken hens.
For Poultry (roosters, ducks geese, turkeys, quail, peafowl) you can keep 2 on a minimum of 1 acre. You can have an additional poultry per additional acre, not to exceed 5 poultry.
The size of the structure needs to be 4ft per poultry animal for hours of darkness, made out of solid material, predator-proof, etc.
For Rabbits, you can have one rabbit for every 2000 square feet of lot size, up to 20 rabbits. The enclosure for the rabbits has to be 6 ft2 per rabbit and has to be covered and predator-proof.
For Beehives for parcels between 35,000ft2 and less than 2 acres, you can have up to 10, up to 15 if you have more than 2 acres.
There are additional rules for animals kept for educational purposes.
There is also a section on manure. You need to clean up the manure at least weekly. You can only store it if you are composting it, and if you have a compost pile, it needs to be 55 ft from all property lines, 500 ft from any well, and also you have to make sure any on-site stormwater is contained around it, and off-site stormwater has to be diverted from it…and you also have to prevent runoff from contaminating surface water or groundwater.
